May 4-8, 2009















Students,
Hope you enjoyed your weekend...Monday is just around the corner. With Monday, we have lots of exciting things to look forward to. We'll have a student observer joining us from CSU!! Please work with him and show CSU future teachers what is great about our class AND school. Additionally, we'll be starting our CRCT Remediation to help you all with passing these tests. WE want you more than ready to start high school this August. I've included two of the Reading Standards that we'll be following closely this week!

READING GPS=
ELA8R2 The student understands and acquires new vocabulary and uses it
correctly in reading and writing. The student
a. Determines pronunciations, meanings, alternate word choices, parts of speech,
or etymologies of words.
b. Determines the meaning of unfamiliar words in content and context specific
to reading and writing.
c. Demonstrates an initial understanding of the history of the English Language.

ELA8R3. The student reads aloud, accurately (in the range of 95%), familiar
material in a variety of genres, in a way that makes meaning clear to listeners.
The student
a. Uses letter-sound knowledge to decode written English and uses a range of
cueing systems (e.g., phonics and context clues) to determine pronunciation
and meaning.
b. Uses self-correction when subsequent reading indicates an earlier miscue
(self-monitoring and self-correcting strategies).
c. Reads with a rhythm, flow, and meter that sounds like everyday speech
(prosody).

EQ: How can I use reading strategies; predicting, evaluating, synthesizing, scanning, skimming, connecting (text to text/self/world), clarifying, questioning, visualizing, vocabulary reviews, context clues, inferring, etc. to help me become a better reader?

Students will read Raymond's Run (p. 3-13)N Taking time to practice Reading Strategies during reading.

Student will answer Inference questions on what they have read on today.

Lesson 2-Level F-Be a better Reader
Activator
Students will create a Venn Diagram on STATIC AND DYNAMIC CHARACTER definition (p6)

Task/Teaching Strategies
Students will read Silent World-page 7-8. Students will recall and interpret facts from the story in class discussion.

Summarizer
Students will answer questions 2 and 3 on page 10 with a partner.

Tuesday
Lesson 1
Activator
Students will define words from story using footnotes in story.
Task/Teaching Strategies
Students will read Raymond's Run (p. 3-13)taking time to practice Reading Strategies during reading-finish story on today.
Summarizer
Student will complete the Conflict Chart on printer paper. Students will answer questions on p. 15 independently or in cooperative pairs.

Lesson 2
Activator
Students will complete a diagram that explains the relationship between cause/effect on p 17. Students will read from this page.

Task/Teaching Strategies
Students will read Earthquakes and Tsunamis while paying close attention to the headings/subheading and other text features. Students will participate in class discussion following Recalling Facts.

Summarizer
Students will complete CAUSE/EFFECT chart on page 22.

Wednesday
Lesson 1
Activator
Students will complete a LIFETIME AWARD to award someone they want to honor for influencing them positively.

Task/Teaching Strategies
Students will make predictions using title of Ms. Flowers-students will read to determine if predictions were true. Students will discuss Maya Angelou and her style of writing in class discussion.

Summarizer
Students will complete the IMAGERY chart on pg 23.

Lesson 2
Activator
Students will draw all the mathematics symbols that they can think of on their white board or the class board.

Task/Teaching Strategies
Students will complete a flip chart on how to solve math word problems while reading instructions to do so on page 23. Students will be provided slips of paper with word problems written on them. Students must rewrite these problems in numeric form and solve with a partner

Summarizer
On a Ticket out the door-Students will quickly recall the five steps given in today's reading for solving math word problems.

Thursday-
Lesson 1
Activator
Students will complete a WORD SPLASH on the board reviewing what they remember about IMAGERY

Task/Teaching Strategies
Students will complete reading of story on today. Students may work independently or in pairs to complete Vocabulary and Comprehension exercises (p. 24=25)

Summarizer
Students participate in THINK-PAIR-SHARE to vote for the most helpful READING STRATEGY for them. TEACHER will tally votes on the board using Mneumonic-
sometimes sometimes ce ce eats pizza very quickly inside

Lesson 2
Activator
Students will write the five steps given on yesterday for solving math word problems.

Task/Teaching Strategies
On White boards, students will write numeric expression of words read by the teacher.
Students will read p. 24-25.

Summarizer
Students will practice working out word problems on pages 26-27 with a partner.

Students will read syllables lesson page 28 and discuss how pronouncing syllables of long words will assist them in improved reading fluency. Students will complete a tri-fold (6-front and back) to take notes on syllables.

Summarizer
Students will review notes with their partner and practice sounding out words in their books. Students will preview Monday's lesson on prefixes on page 30.
